Rupe started his football coaching career as a New Lexington assistant from 2003-06 and was approved by the school’s board of education to replace retired coach Bill Nutt recently. He was on the staff the previous time the Panthers won the Muskingum Valley League after a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2006. Rupe also will be the district’s director of operations. He is taking charge of a team that went 5-5 in 2013. “Bill and a lot of the coaches like Todd Brown, Paul Wollenberg, Bill Padgett and the Wycinskis were mentors and took me under their wings,” he said. “I didn’t foresee this, but I want to thank my Lord and Savior for blessing me and my family for this opportunity.

I believe this is meant for me at this point in my career, and I’m excited about going there.” Crooksville was a special place to Rupe, and he will miss the school and community. “I want to thank Crooksville for all the leadership opportunities they gave me,” he said. “I leave there with a heavy heart because it’s a great place to work and to raise a family.” Rupe went 20-20 in four seasons with the Ceramics. It was a learning experience that will aid him in his second stint as a head coach. “Any time you do something, you reflect on what you would have done differently,” he said.

“I want to make sure our kids and staff have our priorities in line. It’s easy to get away from that in the heat of battle like sacrificing time with family or chasing wins. We want to focus on the kids first and build a foundation of our values to get what we want out of our program.” The New Lexington administration was pleased to bring back a familiar face such as Rupe. His understanding of the program’s expectations was one of many reasons he was chosen, athletic director James Stutzman said. (Rupe) has been a part of the Panther coaching staff in the past and has built numerous relationships with the assistant coaches,” Stutzman said. “The leadership and coaching background coach Rupe brings to our program we believe will allow him to continue to make us successful. It’s the reason we feel the transition will be smooth and should help keep us in the hunt for MVL championships and deep runs in the playoffs.” Those are the ultimate objectives for Rupe, but his first priority is implementing a plan to help the players achieve on and off the field. “Everything we do will be based on the kids and what’s best for them,” he said. “We will be a detailed staff and put a plan together. We will make sure what needs to be a main priority remains that way.
