Microphone Not Working In Hangouts When Using Chrome For Mac

Hi, I have had my Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8) for a few years, and never had any problems with the microphone in the past. Even now, I can use Google Hangouts, Skype etc with no problems (as of Thursday 6th August 2014 @ 2150). However, I cannot search Google Chrome or use any voice dictation software by voice as my microphone is 'not recognised', which is clearly not the case, as I was able to use it successfully less than 5 minutes ago. Is there any reason why the microphone is working for some software but not for others? I have downloaded the latest version of Chrome, and all my Macbook software updates are complete, so there are no other outstanding issues with my Mac.

If you are using a USB headset with microphone, you should see an option such as 'USB Headset' for microphone and speakers. If your only options are 'Default device', close out of the Hangout and completely out of the browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc), check that your devices are connected properly, and then restart the browser and re-enter the.
