Weimer One Of Three Finalists For M.a.c. Hermann Trophy

Story Links STATE COLLEGE, Pa., December 10, 2004 - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in conjunction with the Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) announced Penn State's Tiffany Weimer (North Haven, Conn.) as one of the three finalists for M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, presented annually to the collegiate men's and women's soccer players of the year. The announcement came at the men's College Cup, being held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The winner will be awarded the coveted crystal soccer ball trophy at a banquet, which will be held in St. Louis the evening of Jan. The other finalists for this year's award are Heather O'Reilly from North Carolina and Christine Sinclair from Portland. 'I couldn't be happier for Tiffany and for her selection as one of the top three collegiate players this year,' said Penn State head coach Paula Wilkins.

'She is one of the most talented players in the country with the ball and extremely fun to watch. Her place as one of the finalists is truly a testament to the strength of our team this year as well as to Tiff's skill as an individual player. Having this many elite players be recognized for this award in the past few years I think is also a great indicator of where our program is on the national scene.' Weimer possessed the Lions' knock-out scoring punch all season and was named this year's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

Three players from that team earned All-America recognition, including Weimer, who was runner-up for the Hermann Trophy for the second straight year after breaking the Big Ten goal-scoring record. Weimer was one of six Nittany Lions to earn All-Big Ten honors that season. Additionally, Wilkins was named national and Big Ten coach of the year.

She earned NSCAA first team All-American honors for the second consecutive year Friday after landing a spot on the first team last year. She finished the year as the nation's second-leading goal scorer with a 1.13 goals per game average and is also second in scoring with a 2.78 points per game average. Weimer scored a goal or lent an assist in 20-out-of-23 games for the Lions this season.

At one point, she had a 13-game goal-scoring streak going, just two away from tying the NCAA mark. Weimer netted 26 goals, just one off the Penn State school record mark, and 12 assists this year for 64 points. She started every game the Nittany Lions and put.637% of the shots she took on goal. A six-time recipient of Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week this year, she scored a goal vs. Every Big Ten team in the regular season and had a total of six game winners for the Lions. In its first 11 years as a Division I program, Penn State has a rich history with the M.A.C.

Hermann Trophy. Despite having only one winner, Christie Welsh in 2001, Penn State has placed a player among the top three for each of the last five years.
